GB make winning start at Ice Hockey Worlds

GB Hockey on ice

With a penalty shootout victory over Ukraine in Sfantu Gheorghe, Romania, Great Britain started the Hockey on ice World Championship Division I Group A campaign victorious.

Josh Waller and Brett Perlini gave GB the lead with strikes before Ben O’Connor sent the game into overtime, which failed to allow either side to score any more goals.

Ben Bowns saved all four penalties for Ukraine in the shootout, leading Stevie Lyle to 4-3 in his 82nd cap, while O’Connor and Ben Lake equaled Stevie Lyle for the most appearances by a GB netminder.

The tournament’s first five games feature GB, with hosts Romania taking on Japan, Italy, and Poland on Monday before the hosts’ next opponents.
