After revealing that she is expecting her third child, former world champion Lizzie Deignan announced her immediate retirement.
The 36-year-old road cyclist won 43 professional titles and an Olympic silver medal at the London 2012 Olympics, making her one of Britain’s most successful road cyclists.
The 2015 world champion announced last year that she would retire from cycling at the end of this year, adding that her other notable victories include the first women’s edition of the fabled Paris-Roubaix one-day race in 2021.
However, she has now made a decision based on her pregnancy, posting a photo of a babygrow on Instagram with the caption “A new chapter in the Deignan story,” while her Lidl-Trek team announced her retirement.
Deignan said, “I have this life that gives me so much love and fulfillment outside of cycling.”
The final race of her career took place last month’s Copenhagen Sprint, just a few weeks after she had previously competed for the Tour of Britain Women.
Liege-Bastogne-Liege, Strade Bianche, the Tour of Flanders, and the Women’s Tour are other victories she has won on her palmares.
She gave birth to her son Shea in 2018 and Orla in 2022, two years after taking a career break.
Before making her decision to continue competing in a support role for younger team-mates, she considered retiring in 2022.
