Gaza families break Ramadan fast amid ruins

Gaza families break Ramadan fast amid ruins

As families gathered to observe their fasts during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, a red-covered table carved a path through the rubble in southern Gaza.

Hunderte of Palestinians of all ages dug into their Iftar meal as the sun set over a Rafah neighborhood, where Israel’s war against Gaza has barely left any buildings standing.

Everyone in the room feels heartbreaking, according to Malak Fadda, who had planned the communal meal. “People are deeply saddened, and everything around us feels heartbreaking.

“So we made the decision to restore joy to this street, just as it did before the war.”

Palestinian flags and lights swayed between the broken concrete as the crowd in Rafah sat on a long row of plastic chairs resting on loudspeakers.

Almost the entire population has been displaced by Israeli bombardment and has become affluent, according to the UN.

More aid has been flown into the devasted Palestinian territory as a result of the ceasefire that ended on January 19 but hundreds of thousands of people still reside in tents and are camping out in the rubble of their former homes.

Difficultly gathered in Beit Lahiya’s northern city to break the fast among the remnants of half-broken buildings in the waning evening light.

Mohammed Abu al-Jidyan remarked, “We are steadfast despite the pain and our wounds, and we are here in the midst of destruction and rubble.”
