Gateway Games: Governor Abiodun Mourns Kano Athletes Killed In Accident

Members of the Kano State contingent who were returning home after taking part in the 22nd edition of the state’s National Sports Festival (NSF), Dapo Abiodun, the governor of Ogun State, have expressed their deep sorrow over the tragic incident.

22 athletes died in a crash allegedly caused by a bus carrying the athletes, which was reported to have been reported to have been occurring about 50 kilometers from Kano after passing through Kaduna State.

The governor claimed in a statement released on Saturday in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, that the incident had left him completely traumatized, especially given that the athletes were young, energetic, eager to receive warm reception from their fans and families, and who had a brighter future ahead of them.

Governor Dapo Abiodun expressed his condolences to the Kano State government and the people of Kano State over the incident, saying that their sacrifice would never be forgotten.

The loss of 20 brave athletes who had just finished the Gateway 2024 games, according to him, is indeed saddening and upsetting.

These young people, budding stars who had a lot to give the nation with their talents, abilities, and creativity, are so painful. It is especially tragic that their beloved loved ones, who had a memorable visit to the National Sports Festival, will never see their stunning faces again. At this terrible time, our thoughts and prayers are with their families and friends.

The athletes were enjoying their lives, but their lives were severned just before they set foot on Kano soil after representing Kano with pride and distinction and making friends with their fellow citizens from across the 36 states.
We are deeply distressed by this incident, and we pray that Allah will grant them rest forever.
