Iconic Stone Roses musician Gary ‘Mani’ Mounfield died at the age of 63, just two years after his wife also passed away

Gary ‘Mani’ Mounfield was seen at Ricky Hatton’s funeral in his last public appearance before his own death at 63. It was announced today that the Stone Roses musician had died.

Just weeks ago Mani paid his respects to the world champion boxer at his funeral at Manchester Cathedral. He was spotted wearing a khaki green coat, a brown hat and red tinted glasses at the emotional event.

He was among several other famous faces at the funeral including Tyson Fury, Wayne Rooney and Liam Gallagher on October 10. Mani’s death comes two years after his wife Imelda died from cancer in 2023.

Announcing the sad news of his death, Mani’s family shared a post on Facebook which read: “IT IS WITH THE HEAVIEST OF HEARTS THAT I HAVE TO ANNOUNCE THE SAD PASSING OF MY BROTHER GARY MANI MOUNFIELD. RIP RKID.”

Meanwhile in a post on X, his former bandmate from the Stone Roses Ian Brown wrote: “REST IN PEACE MANI X.” A statement issued on Ian McCulloch, lead vocalist of Liverpool rock band Echo and the Bunnymen’s social media read: “I’m absolutely gutted to hear the news about Mani, who I have always loved and always will love, deeply and forever. Like a brother. I am in shock to be honest.

“Please tell me I’m just having a bad, bad dream. My thoughts and feelings and Manilove to all of his family from me.” Sheffield rock band Reverend and the Makers also said: “My heart is broken. Found out this morning and just felt low as it gets all day. Mani was my musical hero and just a lovely genuine human.

“When my Dad died , he offered me the warmest and best advice. No fuss, privately, straight up and always available to everyone. I’m a bit ill myself at the minute and not ashamed to say I shed at tear at the news. See on the next one mate. A true legend of the game.”

It was revealed that Mani was “itching to get back” into music in one of his final interviews just last month. Speaking in mid-October, Mani had said he had recently been to his lock-up and looked at his bass guitars and was being encouraged by other musicians to try it again.

It’s also thought he may have been inspired by Oasis’ recent come-back tour. Mani got to see the iconic brothers perform several times this year before his death.

Former Stone Roses and Primal Scream bass player Mani said just weeks ago: “I’m in a great space at the moment. Itching to get back bro. I’m ready to get back.”

He added: “Johnny Marr’s always trying to get me to do stuff. Liam (Gallagher) was always trying to get me involved with stuff before the Oasis thing. I’m feeling now that I could pick up again, you know?. I’ve been in the lock up having a look at stuff and weeding out my collection.”

Mani was speaking on The Rockonteurs podcast in an interview which was published on October 19. He told hosts Gary Kemp and Guy Pratt he had seen Oasis four times on the current world tour.

This included one date at Wembley with fellow Stone Roses guitarist John Squire and was also in regular contact with Ian Brown via WhatsApp.

On the gigs he said: “They’re better now than ever, There’s not as much chaos and madness surrounding it and it becomes something with the benefit of a bit of age and y’know maturity.”
