According to research, Brits have an average of eight foods they refuse to eat, five of which are sushi, black pudding, and kimchi, five of which they have never tried.
According to a study, a shocking six out of ten Brits claim to dislike foods they’ve never tried. According to the study, Brits typically have eight food items that they have never tasted, out of which five are on average.
Sushi, black pudding, and kimchi are the most frequently skipped foods, along with anchovies and plant-based cheese alternatives. Top 10 items included tofu, liver, and plant-based milk substitutes. Interestingly, 74% of people claim to be open to trying new foods, while 65% claim to have adventurous taste buds.
The study was commissioned by Boursin Plant-based, which has partnered with TV foodie Frenchman Fred Sirieix, to investigate food biases by hosting blind tastings at food festivals throughout the summer. It comes after a writer claimed ‘I tried butter from Tesco, Aldi, Lidl and big brands – and the winner is not Lurpak’.

Brets claim to be eager to embrace global flavors and culinary trends, but they can be particularly prejudiced when it comes to certain foods, which is one of the biggest obstacles to discovery, according to Fred Sirieix.
There are “a lot of ingredients, including plant-based alternatives to cheese,” with “very negative preconceptions.” Even the most discerning foodies were fooled by this plant-based alternative to cheese when we let the taste do the talking, despite many claims that they could tell the difference between plant-based and dairy.
Only 17% of respondents admitted to being picky eaters despite these findings.
While 28% of people were willing to sample a small portion of a dish, 6% of people said they would be upfront when faced with one they didn’t like.
After giving it a try, over half of the people who initially thought they wouldn’t like it have changed their minds. Blind taste tests or learning about a food’s health benefits were the main driving factors for trying out new flavors.
Nearly half (46%) of respondents said they were willing to try it if the “real thing” tasted as good as the “real thing” and that they would be able to tell the difference between dairy and plant-based alternatives to cheese.
People are very clearly confident in their ability to distinguish between plant-based alternatives, according to Fred Sirieix, who spoke on behalf of Boursin.
Less than 10% of attendees at the Foodies festival were able to tell the difference between Boursin plant-based and dairy.
“It just goes to show – there’s a whole world of flavours out there waiting to be explored if you’re brave enough.
Even the ingredients you might mistakenly dismiss as being based on your own experiences, opinions, or assumptions can still surprise you if you are prepared in the right way. So accept the challenge and let the taste dictate what.
