Four dead after car crashes into after-school camp in US state of Illinois

Authorities in a village outside of Chicago, the United States, reported that four children were killed when a car struck an after-school camp.

According to a statement released on Monday, police in Chatham, Illinois, said the deceased, who was between the ages of four and 18, were killed when the vehicle struck the east side of the YNOT After School Camp building.

Before moving on through the building, the vehicle struck several people outside of it. Before exiting through the west wall of the structure, the vehicle also struck several people inside [the] building, according to police.

According to the police, “a number of additional people have been transported by ambulance to nearby hospitals, and one by a life-flight helicopter.”

According to police, the vehicle’s driver and sole occupant, who was not hurt, was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Authorities did not specify whether they believed the collision was an accident or an intentional one.

JB Pritzker, the governor of Illinois, described the incident as “horrifying” and “deeply saddened” by him.

In a statement posted on X, Pritzker said, “Our community lost a group of bright and innocent young people with their entire lives ahead of them.”

“Parents said goodbye to their kids this morning, not realizing it would be their last.” No parent should have to go through the unimaginable grief these families are going through, and I feel so strongly for them.

The latest incident in a line of recent ones involved people driving into groups of people is the crash.

An SUV sped down a busy street on Saturday during a Vancouver, Canada, Filipino heritage festival, killing 11 people and injuring 32 others.

According to the prosecution, Kai-Ji Adam Lo, a 30-year-old resident of Vancouver, has been charged with eight counts of second-degree murder related to the incident.

When a man ploughed his pick-up truck into a crowd celebrating New Year’s Eve in the US city of New Orleans on January 1, 14 people died.
