Former world champion Hughes retires from the ring

Nina Hughes, a former world champion boxer, has announced her retirement.

The 42-year-old bantamweight champion from Billericay, Essex, said she realized after her winning fight against Nicholine Achieng on Sunday that she had lost interest in fighting.

She first started playing the sport when she was 25 years old, and in her fifth professional match she won the title of world champion in 2022.

Despite defeating Achieng, Hughes claimed that her “bad performance” indicated that she was prepared to hang up her gloves.

In the sixth and final round, Hughes was severely dropped, but he recovered to claim a point victory.

She claimed that “the desire had vanished” about halfway through the conflict. This is going to be my last one, I began to consider.

The intention was to end this one and start a major fight, but things obviously didn’t go as planned.

Nicola Adams was supposed to take Nicola Adams’ place as Team GB at the first Olympics where women’s boxing was a part of the competition, but Hughes was instead slated to represent Team GB at London 2012.

She gave up her sport and had two children, but she only intended to return in the Covid-19 lockdown in 2020.

Her first professional fight took place in December of 2021, followed by three fights through 2022 in six months.

Although Hughes faced American Jamie Mitchell for the title in her first fight, she completely outlasted her in Dubai.

The Englishwoman won the WBA title in London last year, but Cherneka Johnson lost it in a contentious manner last year.

Hughes claimed that retirement has not yet “sunk in,” but “deep down I know it’s the right choice.”

The right time is right, she continued, “I always said I wouldn’t be one of these boxers that went on for too long.”

“I’ve made the right choice because I’ve gone on my terms and when I thought the timing was right.”

After it became more difficult for her to secure fights, Hughes claimed that her coach had backed it.
