Up until the end of the season, West Ham have signed England midfielder Katie Zelem on loan from fellow Women’s Super League team London City Lionesses.
Zelem, 30, made just two league starts this season, starting with London City, which was promoted from NWSL side Angel City in August.
Before departing that summer, the midfielder helped Manchester United advance to the WSL in 2019 and win the FA Cup in 2024 while serving as their captain for six years.
Zelem, who won the 2017-18 Serie A title with Juventus and 143 WSL appearances and 12 senior England caps, reunites with Hammers manager Rita Guarino.
Zelem expressed his excitement at joining West Ham United.
“I want to be successful here, and I want to contribute as much as I can to the team.” I am aware of the presence of a fantastic group of girls in the building, which will provide us with a strong foundation for the remainder of the season.
West Ham have won just one of their 12 games, placing them 11th in the WSL standings, one point ahead of Liverpool in the relegation play-off place.
Rehanne Skinner, who had lost to Chelsea 5-0 in its first WSL game since then, was fired in December. Guarino was appointed.
Zelem praised Guarino, saying, “She was a big factor in why I joined the club.”
“I like what she’s trying to build here and her play.” It’s really nice to be reunited with our former partners, who have always been good friends.
Guarino expressed his satisfaction with working with Katie once more. Her ability to dictate play from the pitch’s center and her set-piece knowledge are both strengths that will help us greatly.
She also has experience in professional football, which will be very beneficial to this elite group of players.
