Flooding: Relocate To Safer Areas Without Delay, NOA Tells Kebbi Residents

Communities along the banks of the River Goronyo and River Niger are advised to relocate immediately as a result of the planned water release from nearby dams by the National Orientation Agency (NOA), Kebbi State Directorate.

According to the report, the initiative was intended to prevent potential flooding and ensure the dams’ structural safety.

The Assistant Director and Head of Media and Communication, Larai Saminu Nazo, in a statement released on Sunday in Birnin Kebbi, conveyed the warning.

INCLUDE   In Kebbi, flood destroys bridges, homes, and farms.

The statement stated that the water’s controlled release was a proactive strategy intended to safeguard the dams’ integrity.

However, it is anticipated to result in a significant rise in river levels, which will put a serious threat to low-lying communities.

The seriousness of this warning cannot be overstated. Water levels in rivers will eventually rise as a result of the gradual release of water, which is necessary to maintain dam safety. Residents of flood-prone regions are in great danger, according to Nazo.

The state NOA directorate added that it was working with relevant river basin authorities and emergency management organizations to ensure that the message is heard by all affected communities and that support is provided where necessary.

Residents are urged to keep informed about evacuation procedures and work closely with local authorities through official channels.

Nazo continued, “We ask that all community leaders, residents, and stakeholders in the affected areas take this warning seriously.”
