After a three-day heavy downpour that caused severe flooding, residents of a number of communities in Ondo State are now counting their losses.

Due to the devastating effects of the flood, many roads, bridges, and homes were flooded, residents were displaced, businesses were closed, and socioeconomic activity was paralyzed.

Uso, Okitipupa, Ilaje, Ese-Odo, and Akoko South West Local Government Areas are some of the affected communities, with many motorists stranded as a result of the collapse of several bridges.

Ayeka, Ikoya, Igbodigo, Igodanlisa, Igbogunrin, Igbotako, and Ilutuntuntun are just a few examples of the affected communities in the Okitipupa local government.

The Naval Base in Igbokoda and the council’s headquarters were submerged in the riverine Ilaje communities, while other coastal communities like Ilare, Omonira, Aboto, Ikuomola, and Mahin and Ugbo were also ravaged.

Many of the people who spoke with our correspondent called on the federal government, humanitarian organizations, and the state government to intervene as a result of their inability to endure.

Additionally, they urged the government to intervene in order to repair the damaged infrastructure and implement long-term flood control measures like improved town planning and drainage construction.

In another interview, Igbokoda resident Adeyori Ojo described how, during the early morning rains, floodwaters surged through Broad Street, he almost escaped with his family.

Tope Omolayo, the head of Owo Local Government, described the devastating effects of the flood in Uso. He pleaded with the federal and state governments as well as intervention organizations to quickly address the victims’ plight.

The traditional ruler of Uso, the Oloba of Uso, Oba Ademola Oyinbade, expressed shock that the flood had paralyzed socioeconomic activities in the area while speaking at his palace during a visit by a delegation of the state government. He also made an urgent request to the government to permanently combat the threat.

Joseph Ijigba, a rural farmer in the area, complained that the local market was closed because the farm’s access road had been blocked by the flood.

Idowu Ojo, the deputy governor’s permanent secretary, expressed sympathy for the flood victims.
