Five England players nominated for Women’s Ballon d’Or

The Women’s Ballon d’Or, which is given to the best female footballer of the year, has nominated five of England’s winning squad for the Euro 2025 championship.

After the Lionesses successfully defended their title in Switzerland this summer, Captain Leah Williamson, Lucy Bronze, Alessia Russo, Chloe Kelly, and Hannah Hampton are all on the list.

Caroline Weir, a midfielder for Scotland for Real Madrid, is also included in the list.

With a broken leg, Chelsea full-back Bronze, 33, did the entire Euros.

One of England’s most renowned women’s footballers, Michelle Agyemang, has been nominated for the Women’s Kopa Trophy, which honors the best under-21 player.

The 19-year-old Arsenal forward was named the Euro 2025 young player of the year after scoring late equalizers against Italy and Sweden in the quarter-final.

Hampton is also a nominee for the best goalkeeper award at Women’s Yachine. The 24-year-old was a key player in Chelsea’s domestic treble-winning campaign and England’s triumph at the Euros.

Sandy Baltimore, a winger from France, and Johanna Rytting Kaneryd, a midfielder from Sweden, are other Blues players who have received nominations.

Both Aitana Bonmati, a Spaniard and Alexia Putellas, a Barcelona teammate and two-time Olympian, are also nominated.

The nominations for Women’s Team Coach of the Year include Arsenal head coach Renee Slegers, Chelsea manager Sonia Bompastor, and Lionesses manager Sarina Wiegman.

Caldentey may have lost in the Euros final, but she did well in her first year at Arsenal, winning the Champions League with seven goals and being named the WSL’s player of the year.

Barcelona and Spain’s Aitana Bonmati

Bonmati, who has already won two times in the past, won a domestic treble with Barcelona last year. She made her mark at the Euros by winning the tournament’s semi-final against Germany and receiving the Player of the Tournament award after recovering from a viral meningitis.

Alessia Russo (Arsenal and England)

Russo was the WSL’s top scorer with 12 goals, which was significant in Arsenal’s triumphant Champions League run. Although the striker only scored twice at Euro 2025, her equalizer against Spain was crucial in regaining momentum in the final.

Spain and Barcelona’s Alexia Putellas

With a strong group stage performance at Euro 2025, Putellas, who won the award in 2021 and 2022, highlighted her Ballon d’Or credentials once more with three goals and four assists. As Barcelona completed a domestic treble last year, she contributed more assists (11) than any other player in Liga F.
