‘Fight back’: Pedro Pascal urges Cannes to resist US political pressure

In what he appeared to call for the Chilean-American actor to “fight back” and continue to express his feelings in the midst of what he appeared to call a “political climate of fear” in the United States.

“F*** the people who try to scare you,” you say. and defend. In telling stories, this is the most effective way to accomplish this. Don’t let them win, Pascal, a 50-year-old man who was watching “Eddington” at the Cannes Film Festival, said.

They win, for one, because of fear. And so continue to tell the stories, express your feelings, and fight for your identity, he said.

In a town in New Mexico where tensions are simmering over COVID-19 mask policies and the Black Lives Matter protests, Pascal portrays a small-town mayor campaigning against a down-on-his-luck sheriff.

Pascal, who is well-known for his role in the dystopian video-game adaptation “The Last of Us,” said he found answering a question about US President Donald Trump’s immigration policy “too intimidating.”

He said it’s very frightful for an actor who’s in a movie to sort of address this situation.

“I’m an immigrant,” I said. My parents are Chilean refugees. I was granted asylum in the US after we fled a dictatorship, and I still support those rights,” the 50-year-old said at a press conference in Cannes.

Trump’s policies have sparked a flurry of lawsuits and protests, including one involving illegal immigration, and he has also detained and moved to deport a number of legal permanent US residents.

After announcing on May 5 that he wanted 100 percent tariffs on movies “produced in foreign lands,” Trump has become one of Cannes’ main talking points this week.
