FG Must Stop Threatening Nigerians For Criticising Govt – Amnesty Int’l

The Federal Government must stop threatening those who criticize the current administration, according to Amnesty International on Sunday.

In complete disregard for the international law and the constitution of Nigeria, the authorities must stop using violence and threats against individuals and groups who hold dissension. The organization stated on its X handle that holding and expressing opposing views is against the law.

Ushie Uguamaye, a member of the Lagos-based National Youth Service Corps, allegedly threatened and intimidated others.

Following her criticism of President Bola Tinubu’s administration’s financial difficulties as a result of the economic reforms, she made this comment public on TikTok.

The human rights organization criticized the alleged threats made by NYSC officials, arguing that Uguamaye was entitled to voice her outrage over the country’s worsening economic conditions.

“Amnesty International firmly condemns intimidation and threats directed at a woman who lamented the country’s current economic hardship. The woman claimed that NYSC @officialnyscng threatened her because she refused to remove the video, according to the statement.

She has no right to express her feelings in a peaceful manner. The authorities should prioritize addressing the nation’s economic problems rather than confront her about her views on rampant inflation.

“Nigerians are in extreme poverty, millions of people.” Millions of people are left without the opportunity to escape the economic difficulties and enjoy their human rights because the authorities have not yet implemented effective mitigation measures.

Uguamaye claimed that she began receiving threats from NYSC officials shortly after the video went viral.
