Following a 1-1 draw at 10-man AC Milan, which gave Feyenoord a 2-1 overall lead over the seven-time kings of Europe, they made it to the Champions League’s last 16.

In the dying minutes of Santiago Gimenez’s first-minute opener for Milan, the Dutch were sent through to meet either Inter Milan or Arsenal thanks to Julian Carranza’s 73rd-minute winner.

As the away team pushed themselves to the next round, Argentine attacker Carranza scored for Feyenoord shortly after coming on as a substitute, while Milan struggled as a result of Theo Hernandez’ red card early in the second half.

Hernandez was already booked just before half-time for a needless foul on Anis Hadj-Moussa when Givairo Read put pressure on him, and referee Szymon Marciniak ruled that he had dived in the penalty box.

The France full-back was dismissed, leaving Milan on the back foot after having dominated up to that point.

Hernandez’s sending-off and Carranza’s tie-winning header ruined what looked to be Gimenez’s night when he nodded home the opener against his old team after just 36 seconds.

Gimenez, a forward from Mexico, has already scored three times for Milan since making the switch during the winter transfer window from Feyenoord. However, his sixth Champions League goal this season was also his last.
