After a video that appeared to show him repeatedly whipping a horse, the FEI, the world’s governing body for equestrian sport, has launched an investigation into Australian Olympian Heath Ryan.
Equestrian Australia suspended Ryan last week following a video that claimed to show a man punching a horse about 40 times.
The 66-year-old was temporarily suspended after the video broke out that claimed he was acting “in the horse’s best interest.”
However, the FEI claims to have opened an investigation “in response to allegations of horse abuse reported to the FEI and Equestrian Australia, as well as the posting of a video on social media showing abusive training methods.”
The scenes are incredibly disturbing and conflict wildly with FEI horse welfare’s core values, according to FEI secretary general Sabrina Ibanez.
Equestrian Australia’s CEO, Sam Jones, stated: “FEI’s leadership in this matter is both appropriate and welcome.”
Equestrian Australia is “deeply concerned” about the incident and allegations, and we will continue to support the FEI.
We are aware that our community is eager for answers, but we would appreciate your patience because the FEI adheres to their policies and procedures by conducting a thorough and just process.
Ryan placed seventh overall at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games as he competed dressage for Australia.
He claimed that after an accident, a female rider was taken to the hospital and that the horse, named Nico, came to him.
After the video, Nico claimed that he had always been a troubled child and would never stop. He later learned that he had managed to rehome the horse.
Ryan expressed his sadness that this was discovered on camera. I would have just left Nico at the knackery if I had been thinking about myself right away.
I genuinely had to make my best effort to see if Nico would consider other options because that video was a life or death experience for him.
“All of this transpired honestly with the horse’s best interests as the only consideration,” the horse said. Unbelievably, everyone else’s success came with the release of this video.
After a video of her repeatedly striking a horse around its legs with a long whip, Britain’s three-time Olympian champion Charlotte Dujardin, who had been in the video, was forced to miss the Paris Games last year.
