Tolu Bobade, 17, was allegedly tortured and killed by policemen working at the Ifon divisional station, according to the Bobade family of Ifon, in Ose Local Government Area of Ondo State, in a petition to the Chief Justice of Ondo State, Justice Aiyedun Odusola.
The petition claimed that the young man had been tortured to death by police on February 14.
The Tolu Bobade death certificate was included in the petition, which was signed by Dupe Bobade on behalf of the family on February 17th, 2018.
The Chief a judge was informed by the petition, which was entitled “Petition for Justice in the Case of Late Master Tolu Bobade,” that Mr. Bobade, age 17, had died unexpectedly in circumstances that were against the laws of Nigeria.

According to the petition, Tolu was detained by officers from the Ifon Police Division on February 14, 2025, at the direction of Divisional Police Officer (DPO) Isadare Funminiyi.
It further alleged that during his detention, Tolu was subjected to severe torture, leading to his death on the 15th of February, 2025.
“In a grievous attempt to obscure their misconduct, the officers transported his lifeless body to Adelabu Hospital in Ifon, where it was rejected”, the petition read.
“Subsequently, they moved his remains to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Owo, where it was deposited in the morgue on their own without the knowledge of the family”.
The Chief Judge’s attention was drawn to the fact that the police’s actions in the Ifon Division directly violate the country’s legal statutes, which explicitly forbid torture and custody abuse:
The petition cited Section 1 of the Anti-Torture Act, which mandates that no person should be subjected to physical or mental torture, but rather that all people, including suspects and detainees, must be treated with respect for their inherent dignity.
It further noted that Section 2 of the Act defined torture as any act by which severe pain or suffering, whether physical or mental, is intentionally inflicted to obtain information, punish, or coerce, just as Section 3 emphasizes that no exceptional circumstances, including a state of war or internal political instability, may be invoked to justify torture.
Section 8 further states that anyone who engages in torture is subject to a maximum sentence of 25 years in prison upon conviction.
The Bobade family demanded an immediate and thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding Tolu’s arrest, detention, and death.
The petition, which was also sent to Olukayode Ajulo, the attorney general and commissioner for justice, read, “The Bobade family seeks solace in the assurance that justice will prevail,” it read.
