Geraint Thomas, the former champion of the Tour de France and the Olympic team, has been appointed Ineos Grenadiers’ racing director.

After a glittering career, the 39-year-old Welshman quit racing in the summer of 2025.

“I’ve known this team since day one, and I think it’s only natural for me to take this position,” Thomas said.

I want to carry on our incredible past success into the future because I’ve learned so much from those around me, my fellow riders, and my staff.

The influential figure at Ineos, Sir David Brailsford, said: “Geraint typifies what it means to be a Grenadier.

He has consistently delivered top performance throughout his career. He consistently and consistently accomplished his ambitious goals.

Thomas, who won the 2018 Tour de France while playing for Team Sky in the team’s former incarnation, also placed third on the Grand Tour podium three times.

He also contributed to Chris Froome and Sir Bradley Wiggins’ dominance of the prestigious three-week race around France, which they won seven times between 2012 and 2019.

Brailsford, who earlier resigned from his position at Ineos to take up a position at Manchester United earlier this year, will be hoping Thomas can help them resurrect their fortunes.

The 61-year-old added, “He knows what the process takes, how to deal with the highs and lows of elite sport, and his willingness to share this with others to do the same is a great asset for the team.

The fact that he has always had a great sense of humor and remained so humble are also great qualities to include in his new role.

Thomas, a former Whitchurch High School student, also had success on the track, winning Olympic gold in Beijing, China, in 2008 and London, 2012, respectively.

He also had a great time competing in the Commonwealth Games against Wales.

Thomas’ career began when he was a child in Cardiff, England, and ended there in September as the 2025 Tour of Britain came to an end.

Ineos stated that Thomas will collaborate closely with Dr. Scott Drawer, Dr. Brailsford, and the rest of the senior management team in providing important input into race recruitment, development, and race readiness.
