The 38-year-old former Netherlands international was taken to a hospital on Friday.

The news was made by FC de Rebellen, a nonprofit that represents former football players like Drenthe.

Royston Drenthe had a stroke last Friday, according to a statement.

Drenthe is in good hands and is currently receiving good care. A quick recovery is hoped by the team and the parties involved.

Drenthe started out in the professional ranks at Feyenoord before moving to Real Madrid in 2007, where he won the La Liga title a year later.

Prior to joining Reading and Sheffield Wednesday, he had previous loan spells at Everton in 2011 and 2012 respectively.
