Everything you need to know about the inquest by BBC TV legend Daniel Postgate

  • Daniel Postgate, the 61-year-old son of Bagpuss creator Oliver Postgate, was found dead in a shed at his Whitstable home in June. He was the son of BAFTA-winning author Oliver Postgate. He committed suicide just one day after receiving a letter from the NHS regarding his treatment for a rare blood cancer, according to an inquest.
  • The NHS correspondence also contained a warning that myelodysplastic syndrome, which he had recently received, might return in the future. Despite the positive aspects of the update, Daniel was overjoyed by the worry that his illness would eventually not be treated, according to a report from his family.
  • According to the coroner, Daniel had been suffering from underlying depression for close to 40 years and had recently broken up with his 35-year-partner. His brother, Simon, described their final call as “chatty and relaxed.”
  • His family left a heartbreaking suicide note for them that he wrote “wonderful lives” and urged them to “remember to love each other” on the note. At the scene, the note was discovered.
  • According to the coroner, Daniel committed suicide because he didn’t want to go through with additional medical care. Although the specific “why” is difficult to answer, the evidence clearly indicated his desire to avoid experiencing his illness return.
