Jonny Evans will work under Darren Fletcher’s interim head coach once more.
After deciding to stop playing for Northern Ireland, former defender Evans was appointed manager of loans and pathways at the club last summer.
Following Ruben Amorim’s departure on Monday, the 38-year-old is expected to step down as manager and assist Fletcher in his preparation for Wednesday’s Premier League game at Burnley.
The club intends to name Amorim’s permanent replacement in the summer, with Fletcher expected to remain in place until a caretaker is chosen.
United travel to Brighton on Sunday for the FA Cup and host derby rivals Manchester City on January 17 after facing Burnley at Turf Moor.
Before joining West Brom after leaving United in 2015, Fletcher and Evans shared a nine-year partnership at Old Trafford.
Evans, who made 241 appearances for United, graduated from their academy and won three Premier League titles, the Champions League, the Club World Cup, the FA Cup, and two League Cups.
Evans also spent two seasons on loan at Sunderland and two spells at Old Trafford. He also played for West Bromwich Albion and Leicester City in the Premier League.
