England ignore calls to send first-choice batters to tour match

Despite suffering a disappointing defeat in the first Test, England refused to give their first-choice batters some match practice in an Ashes tour game in Canberra.

The tourists’ two-day defeat in Perth, which leaves an 11-day break before the second Test, a day-night fixture in Brisbane, was decided.

Players who had played in the first Test may now play in England Lions’ two-day pink-ball game against a Prime Minister’s XI in the capital on Saturday and Sunday.

Only Josh Tongue, Matthew Potts, and Jacob Bethell, both of whom were not in the first Test, will join the Lions in the Ashes squad.

None of the England players from the opening Test squad, according to what we know, requested a game in Canberra.
