This year’s Emmy Awards are upon us and there is a host of British and Irish talent hoping to take home one of the prestigious gongs in Los Angeles

This year’s Emmy Awards in Los Angeles feature a mix of seasoned British and Irish actors alongside rising stars, all competing for television’s highest honours. Leading the charge is Adolescence sensation Owen Cooper, who could become the youngest male Emmy winner if he takes home the Supporting Actor award for Netflix’s hit series, which has earned 13 nominations.

A TV insider hailed the decision to enter Owen in the Supporting Actor category as a “genius move,” boosting his chances. He will face co-star Ashley Walters, who is also nominated for his first Emmy as DI Luke Bascombe. Co-stars Erin Doherty and Stephen Graham, who co-created and co-wrote Adolescence, have earned nominations as well. Stephen is up for Outstanding Leading Actor and Outstanding Writing in a Limited Series, while Erin is nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actress after her gripping one-take scene as child psychologist Briony was described by The Guardian as “the most astounding episode of a dazzling quartet.”

Also in contention are The White Lotus star Aimee Lou Wood and Irish actor Colin Farrell, who is hoping to replicate his Screen Actors Guild Award win for The Penguin.

Ahead of the ceremony, Owen reflected on his meteoric rise: “I will never forget this for the rest of my life. If I break the record that would be cool. It’s all next level. This time last year I didn’t know what I’d be doing. Never could I have believed that this show would change my life in the way that it has.” He also revealed a childhood dream: seeing Tom Holland in The Impossible inspired him to act, and he now hopes to take on the role of Spider-Man in the Marvel Universe.

Meanwhile, Aimee Lou Wood, 31, opened up about insecurity surrounding her casting in The White Lotus. Speaking to British GQ, she explained that creator Mike White “had to fight” for her role, triggering her imposter syndrome: “My little head goes: ‘HBO didn’t want me. And I know why HBO didn’t want me, it’s because I’m ugly.’ Mike had to say, ‘Please let me have the ugly girl!’ That was the thing that was in my head.”

Aimee has been widely praised for embracing her natural teeth rather than conforming to Hollywood beauty standards. On The Jonathan Ross Show, she said: “I can’t believe the impact my teeth are having. Americans can’t get over them. Even the way White Lotus fans are talking about me and my teeth – that I don’t have veneers or Botox – it feels a bit rebellious.”

The 2025 Emmys promise a blend of history-making talent and bold performances, with both veteran actors and new faces leaving a lasting mark on television this year.
