Two-time Academy-award-winner Emma Stone arguably stole the show at last night’s SNL50 anniversary, as she stepped out in a floor-length dress stuffed to the brim with popcorn. However, it appears that the gown may have transcended the scope of its fandom.
The Hollywood actress surprised and delighted viewers as she strutted the carpet while sporting a red Louis Vuitton gown with deep pockets and soft white kernels. She even had a stripy red popcorn bucket on her throughout the night to complete the look.
Fans praised the actress for choosing a fearless outfit in a popular X post. One wrote: “Emma Stone out here proving she’s an icon—snacks on deck, fashion on point. That’s not a dress, that’s a walking concession stand”! Some claimed it increased their love for her. “She’s so silly, love her”, one account wrote.
Others were fixated on the rare sight of a woman’s dress featuring practical pockets: “Gotta respect the girl’s pocket game. Because she can, she has the money to purchase a dress that can hold all that popcorn.
But, despite the positive reactions, it seems the joke went over a lot of people’s heads.
In actuality, the dress was serving more than an easy-to-reach-snack. It was likely intended as a tongue-in-cheek remark on the term “popcorn actress,” a slurrer used to describe actresses who appear in well-known films but don’t have critical success. The sneaky assumption is that they don’t have the talent to support their looks, which leads to significant roles.
Demi Moore most recently revealed that a producer had referred to her as a “popcorn actress” 30 years ago in her acceptance speech for her role in The Substance at the Oscars in 2025. The 62-year-old star went on to explain that it shook her confidence in her craft, leading her to believe she was undeserving of serious acknowledgement.
As an actress that has received sixteen awards, including Oscars, BAFTAs, and Golden Globes, Emma was well-poised to drive the point that actresses can be both glamorous and accomplished.
Although, there were some critiques over the actress ‘ ironic look. Some TikTok users couldn’t help but notice how much popcorn was leaking from Emma’s enormous pockets during the video.
One comment in the Vogue clip read, “Someone should be following her with a vacuum.” Another wrote, “Love her, but hope she thanks who ever had to pick that up for her”.
