Although he has never made a secret of his battle with addiction and the devastating effects drugs had on his life, it was during this difficult time that he admitted to making a heartbreaking confession.
Singer Elton John has candidly confessed his desire to “die a natural death” following his harrowing struggle with addiction. The iconic Crocodile Rock singer battled addictions to “drugs, alcohol, food and sex” during his bleakest periods.
In 1990, he took the brave step of seeking help, checking into a treatment facility. In his revealing 2019 autobiography Me, Sir Elton, now aged 78, recounted the poignant letter he wrote to cocaine while undergoing treatment at the Lutheran Hospital in Park Ridge, Illinois. He wrote: “You have been my w***e. You have kept me from any sort of spirituality and you have kept me from finding out who I really am.”
I don’t want you and I to share the same grave, he said in a sharp rejection of his previous life. When I pass away, at peace with myself, I want to pass naturally. Instead of hiding behind my celebrity status, I want to live the rest of my life being open and facing the consequences.
He reflected on his long-term relationship with the drug, saying: “I feel as though, after sixteen years with you, I was dead anyway.”, reports the Express.
Elton and Hugh Williams were at the time romantically involved. The couple first met in the 1980s, and they both went on to abuse.
However, Hugh’s decision to quit their destructive lifestyle and enter rehab eventually gave rise to Elton’s similar example.
However, Elton admitted to the Daily Mail that he had to make the difficult decision that would change his life: “I went ballistic, screaming, shouting, and saying the most hurtful things I could think.” After that, I spent two weeks snorting cocaine and drinking whisky and sleeping in a rented house in London.
Elton eventually realized that he needed assistance, and despite his initially difficult rehab experiences, he managed to master some fundamental life skills, such as cleaning his own room and using a washing machine, which he hadn’t done for decades because his staff did them.
After spending six weeks in a rehab facility, Elton now has a severe dislike for people who are drug users. He admitted, “I just leave because, to be honest, it’s a drug that causes people to act like a*******s,” and that’s 45 years ago.
Elton recently opened up about a series of health challenges that sparked concern among fans around the world. It left him contemplating his own mortality. The music icon appeared on The Graham Norton Show in February alongside singer-songwriter Brandi Carlile to promote their track, Who Believes In Angels?
Elton remarked about how a surprise hit home while the songwriting process for a different project forced him to consider his future. He acknowledged that he was overcome with emotion when he began to work on the song When This Whole World Is Done With Me, which was written by Bernie Taupin for a while.
When I reach the end of the song, he said, “I realize it’s about my death and demise. And you think about, “How long have I got,” as a 76-year-old man who was at the time and having children and a husband, mortality, and What is the length? I’m hoping I’ve got much longer than I might have.
And so, by the time I reached the chorus, I had forgotten about singing it for 45 minutes. For me, it was a very, very heavy moment. I recorded the next day when you’re singing about being washed out of the sea and the end of your life, and I was alright after 45 minutes of being consoled.
