Edinburgh defeated Benetton in the Rugby World Cup to ease the pressure on head coach Sean Everitt – but were made to sweat at Stadio Monigo.

A three-match losing streak was fueled by Scottish rivals Glasgow Warriors’ subsequent defeats.

Ross Thompson converted after Ben Vellacott crossed off a ruck.

Soon after the break, the visitors had already a 10-point lead over Thompson.

Early in the second half, Darcy Graham forced Edinburgh to score a second try, but Thompson evaded the conversion.

The first converted try came from Benetton, with prop Thomas Gallo opening the scoring with an extra try and Jacob Umaga adding the extras.

And Malakai Fekitoa touched down, and the hosts crossed once more. With 23 minutes left, Umaga’s conversion restored the hosts’ lead.

Edinburgh held on for a tense conclusion, but Thompson’s replacement Cammy Scott, who had missed a late penalty, held on for their first URC victory since late November.

Edinburgh are up to three wins from eight this season in the division.
