Jamie Borthwick, a former EastEnders actor, cut a happy figure as he introduced a new year message to his fans months after being fired from the long-running BBC soap opera.

It’s been a year to forget for Jamie Borthwick, and now the actor has shared a sad Christmas message. Months after being let go by EastEnders producers, Jamie, 31, has uploaded a sombre looking image and message.

He had played the part of Jay on the BBC soap since 2006. However, following a fallout amid Strictly chaos, Jamie found himself suspended by the soap. Three months later, he was axed, losing his role in September this year.

Now, in a rare social media update, Jamie has tried to look on the positive side of things – even if his picture appears to portray a different message. Taking to Instagram, he shared a picture of himself looking glum while wearing a paper Christmas hat.

“Wishing everyone a very happy Christmas and a slightly better 2026 for us all,” was the caption for the black-and-white image. He added two giggling-face emojis and two peering-face emojis.

Since his exit from the popular soap, Jamie has largely avoided social media. Following the release of footage that exhibited a vile language, he had been suspended.

While filming Strictly in the seaside town, he was heard using the offensive term for people with disabilities to describe Blackpool residents. His language, which was discovered in a video on a phone, was “entirely unacceptable and in no way reflects the values or standards we hold and expect,” according to the BBC at the time.

BBC Studios, the soap’s producer, announced at the time that Jamie Borthwick would not be making a return trip to EastEnders. On individual matters, we don’t make any comments.

Jamie should reflect on what he had said, according to the disability charity Scope, and get help from him. We hope he takes the opportunity to learn about the daily lives of those with disabilities.

After the incident, the actor, who had previously played Jay Brown in a funeral home, was spotted looking hopeless and unclothed. He may have been informed about the decision by the bosses days before the news broke.

After the suspension, he reportedly was scheduled to return to the set to resume filming. Instead, the door was shown to him. with the BBC declaring, “We are very clear about our expectations that inappropriate behavior and language will not be tolerated.”

Jamie expressed regret for any offence or upset that Jamie’s words and actions have caused in June. There is no justification for my ignorance of the offensive term I used and its definition.

That completely irritates me. I am now aware that I directed the phrase in the manner that I did, and that I am deeply embarrassed to have used it. It was incorrect.
