Iga Swiatek, the second-ranked player, came out in force to defeat Ekaterina Alexandrova in the Korea Open.
Swiatek, the reigning champion of Wimbledon, had already lost 3-1 in the decider and won by two points.
When the Russians were 6-5 up in the second set, Alexandrova had 15-30 on the Pole’s serve and had 11 points more than Swiatek.
However, Swiatek made a comeback to hold serve before dominating the third-set tie-break and breaking Alexandrova late in the fourth set to win.
Swiatek joked that her success made up for her father Tomasz’s unsuccessful Olympic bid for a medal at the 1988 Olympics in Seoul.
Because of the family history, she said, “I’m happy that I could win here.”
The most victories for Swiatek on the WTA Tour are 57, which is Swiatek’s 57th of the year.
After winning the Cincinnati Open and Wimbledon, both of which were held in the previous three months, Swiatek now holds the title of third.
To Alexandrova, Swiatek said, “Honestly, I don’t know how I won it, because you were just playing great.”
“I made an effort to stay alive,” I said.
After testing positive for a banned substance, Swiatek took a rest for the majority of his Asian swing last year. He then served a portion of a one-month doping ban.
