A tribute from Meredith Wheeler described her “dear friend” as a “playful and gifted artist” who was “talented in so many ways”. On a video tribute posted to her YouTube channel, she wrote: “A playful and gifted artist, he worked with all kinds of media, from sculpture to paint. He was an expert in ceramic restoration.
“He laid a beautiful table and was a fabulous cook. It was a joy to attend a meal at his beautiful home with his partner, Emma Temple.” She continued: “He was a great equestrian along with Emma and loved his dogs. His gardening was stunning as the montage illustrates. He had an impish sense of humor and a generous heart.”
When Donald passed away, Meredith said that he was “much loved and appreciated by his community in the Tarn where he operated an English-speaking theatre for many years, performing, directing, and producing – adding to the cultural life of the region.” She wrote “Farewell, dear Donald,” to end her tribute. You will be greatly missed.
The late artist began his studies at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) before enrolling at Edinburgh College of Art. In a 1969 episode of The Avengers, he first appeared in a television role as Tony Pringle in the role of Tony Pringle in Budgie, which was his first television role.
Another tribute from actor Toby Hadoke described Donald as bringing “a bit of heft and a touch of class to his roles”. Alongside a carousel of photographs of his late friend, Toby continued: ““He was terrific in Poldark, his Vural in Doctor Who’s The Sontaran Experiment was much more rounded and believable than he would have been in lesser hands…
“… and he was Colin Firth’s dad in Bridget Jones for goodness’ sake. Not to mention good parts in Poirot, Blake’s 7 and Eastenders (in which he was very memorable).” He continued: “Glad I got to spend some time with him and when I did he chatted very amiably and humbly about his terrific career. RIP. Fine actor, nice man.”
His most recent role was in the 2021 drama Nobody Has Know, which was screened at the Toronto Film Festival that year.
