Mark Williams, a three-time world champion, says he needs to make a “big decision” about whether to have lens replacement surgery.
The Welshman’s procedure is scheduled for June 12th, when he meets world number one Judd Trump in his World Championship semi-final at the Crucible. He is 8-8 overall.
Williams, who turned 50 in March, recently claimed that his vision had “deteriorated quite severely” and that his eyes had “decreased quite badly” in the previous six months.
He claims that Anthony Hamilton, a fellow professional who was once ranked in the top 10, told him that it had “ruined his career” and that this has sparked his discouragement.
Williams said, “I’ve been reading up and talking to people who have had it done, and I’ve got to be honest, it is putting me off a little bit.
I have to make a significant decision. Anthony Hamilton, one of the people I’ve spoken to, has claimed that it’s bad under the lights and that it’s ruining his career.
Two months after reaching the Saudi Arabia Masters final, Williams, who is currently ranked sixth in the world, won the Champion of Champions title in November.
Before the World Championship, he tried wearing contact lenses, but after discussions with his coach Lee Walker, he decided to play without them.
On the final black in Sheffield, he defeated fellow “Class of 92” member John Higgins and fellow’s Wu Yize, Hossein Vafaei, and won a classic against them.
If he defeats Trump, he would become the oldest player to reach the Crucible final.
