In the beloved British sitcom Fawlty Towers opposite her fictional husband John Cleese, who played Basil Scales, Prunella Scales, who passed away at the age of 93, is best known for playing Sybil Fawlty in the role of Basil Scales in the fictional husband.
Beloved British actress Prunella Scales, who has died aged 93 after a decade-long battle with dementia, will always be remembered as Sybil Fawlty opposite John Cleese’s quick-tempered Basil in Fawlty Towers.
Although their on-screen union may have been chaotic, the pair still had a lasting friendship and a deep professional respect for one another.
Although Prunella has since gained notoriety for her portrayal of Sybil, she wasn’t sure what to expect when the role first appeared in 1975.
In a piece he wrote for The Daily Mail in 2023, her husband, the late Timothy West, recalled that when she first read the Fawlty Towers scripts, she was uncertain about the project.
She told him, “I don’t really know what to make of this,” she said. It’s a sitcom that takes place in a Torquay hotel. They want me to play the owner’s wife, who is known as Sybil Fawlty.
Prunella was persuaded by John’s enthusiasm for the series after meeting him, who was well-known at the time for being one of Monty Python’s co-founders.
She even imagined Sybil’s entire history when she decided she was Sybil’s biological daughter would be a South Coast pub family who fell for Basil’s posh charm and soon realized she had married an upper-class fool.
John admired her concept, and that character development significantly altered the show’s overall tone. Although the filming of Fawlty Towers was intense, Scales and Cleese’s working relationship endured throughout the shoot.
Like working with a live machine gun, John has an enormous amount of energy and can be quite frightening at times, Scales once said to Timothy. You just have to keep it pointing away from you.
However, the two developed a synchronized rhythm that gave them comedy gold. For his part, John attributed Prunella’s ability to better define Sybil to him and Connie Booth, the co-writer of Fawlty Towers, had envisioned.
Later, John later remarked, “We’d written her differently from how Pru played her.” However, we realized that her version had performed better than ours by the second day. Pra provided it for us.
It was clear that Prunella and Timothy were still closely in touch with John towards the end of their lives, as Prunella’s late husband discussed their shared thoughts on John’s decision to work on a modern version of Fawlty Towers during an interview with Saga in 2023.
He explained to the publication, “We are both interested because he thinks it’s something you could make again.” However, things won’t stay the same. The couple’s close friend, who played Manuel in a restaurant and passed away from vascular dementia in 2016, won’t be starring in it.
I would have said, “You’ve done it, if it had been me. Everyone adored it, and it was perfect. What else will you be doing? If that’s what John wants to do, that’s fine. John and his personality are very close to our hearts and we consider him to be brilliant. Will we be able to watch it, though? “I don’t know,”
Sadly, in 2014, Prunella was given the diagnosis of vascular dementia. Timothy acknowledged that he felt he was witnessing the “gradual disappearance” of the person he knew and loved and described how it was like to live with her as she began to lose her memory.
Despite the difficulties Prunella’s fading memory posed to their relationship, the couple stayed married for 61 years until Timothy’s death in 2024, and he said that getting to spend more time with her after the end of her career brought him a lot of joy.
Although she left many things behind toward the end of her life, Fawlty Towers always stayed close to Prunella’s heart, and the actress’s sons claim that she was even watching the sitcom the day before she passed away.
Our beloved mother, Prunella Scales, passed away peacefully at home in London yesterday, according to Samuel and Joseph West, in a statement released to the PA News Agency.
“She was 93. She continued to reside at home despite her retirement from a remarkable acting career that spanned nearly 70 years. The day before she passed away, she was watching Fawlty Towers.
We would like to thank everyone who assisted Pru in moving forward with her life, ensuring that she spent her final days peaceful, content, and surrounded by love.
