Ten months after being forced to resign from his role in Benfica’s boyhood club Rosario Central due to threats of death, Angel di Maria will return to his old club.
The 37-year-old joined Rosario in 2005, and the top-flight Argentine club announced his return on Thursday.
There are more pages to write about our history together. The Rosario-based club posted a video to X that read, “Welcome home.”
Before joining Benfica in Europe, the 2022 World Cup winner spent two seasons with Rosario.
He then appeared in more than 700 international matches for Juventus, Real Madrid, Manchester United, Paris St. Germain, and Benfica.
Di Maria’s plans to rejoin Rosario as a free agent were put on hold last summer due to rising drug-related violence and threats to his and his family.
Di Maria stated in a statement from last July that there was a threat to my sister’s business, a box with a pig’s head and a bullet in the forehead, and a note that said my daughter Pia would be the next head when I went back to [Rosario] Central.
“Those months were terrible. We were only able to linger on the floor and we cried each night because we couldn’t carry that dream back.
Di Maria has won 30 European titles, including titles in three leagues, the 2013-14 Champions League with Real, and the World Cup and two Copa America titles with Argentina.
