Jide Ojo, a public affairs analyst, claims that Peter Obi, a former Labour Party presidential candidate, may be acting on the basis that he will be able to use the platform for the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in the 2027 election.
On Wednesday, Obi and other South-East geopolitical leaders officially transitioned from LP to ADC in Enugu State.
They claimed that they had come to the ADC and had formed a coalition with other opposition leaders to “rescue Nigeria from the All Progressives Congress (APC)’s) poor governance.
Ojo made a prediction on Wednesday’s episode of The Morning Brief on Channels Television that the party’s most renowned member, former vice president Atiku Abubakar, might step down in exchange for Obi, thereby allowing him to become the party’s presidential candidate.
Political actors pursue whatever platform or arrangement offers them the best chance of winning power, according to him, stressing that politics is fundamentally driven by interests, not charity.
Politics is “a game of interest,” the saying goes. Politicians don’t engage in it for the sake of charity when they do it. They want to have power, and whatever will happen to them, Ojo said.
He believes that important negotiations within the ADC may have already come to an end thanks to Obi’s confidence in being on the ballot.
Peter Obi, a former Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, “perceptively knows something that we don’t know.” According to him, it is possible that the ADC has reached a deal with its most prominent member, Atiku Abubakar, to allow him to run for president.
Ojo added that Obi’s statement is illogical if he intends to switch political parties in the near future, especially given the possibility of new political parties being registered by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
If he declares today for ADC and perhaps the following week or in January when INEC licenses new political parties, I don’t see him jumping ship. I don’t see him leaving the ADC and running for president with no other party in such a short period of time,” Ojo said.

He also made reference to Obidient Movement reports, noting that Obi’s supporters have made it clear they won’t support him if he runs against Atiku Abubakar for vice-president.
Ojo added that a deal that would allow Obi to serve a single term if elected in 2027, in order to allow a return to the North in 2031, could be a part of the ongoing negotiations, according to what he described as “the grapevine.”
