Justin Hood, a well-known English debutant, defeated Josh Rock, who was 11th seed, in a final performance that would make them the PDC World Championship champions.

The 32-year-old made his first 11 doubles appearances in astonishing fashion, missing for the first time when attempting to beat 143 to win the match in straight sets.

He missed his first of four match darts in that leg, but he was pleased to the Alexandra Palace crowd, who chanted his name throughout the match.

Rock couldn’t help but smile in disbelief as Hood continued to land twice as well at the back of the stage.

With his World Championship earnings, which are currently at £100,000, Hood has previously stated that he wants to start a Chinese restaurant, but he will first make plans for a quarter-finale against either Michael van Gerwen or Gary Anderson on Thursday.

He declared to Sky Sports, “It’s not a fairytale; I know what I can do, and it’s nice to show it.” Only when I was throwing to win it and finally the end, did I experience some nerves?

Jonny Clayton, the fifth seed in Wales, defeated Andreas Harrysson earlier to set up a last-eight tie with Ryan Searle, the country’s fifth seed.

In the fifth set, Harrysson missed opportunities to take a 3-2 lead, while the final six sets were played in the final set.

Andreas was hitting doubles, Clayton said.

It was difficult,” he said. I had a lot of loose darts and didn’t play my best darts, but pressure does a lot to you. Andreas constantly put pressure on me.

With his victory, Clayton will be temporarily up to fourth in the PDC world rankings and automatically qualified for the Premier League if he holds that spot until the tournament is over.

Poland’s Krzysztof Ratajski defeated 25th seed Luke Woodhouse 4-2 in the opening match on Tuesday, tying them for a quarter-final spot against defending champion Luke Littler.

Three more quarter-finalists will be chosen later on Tuesday, with the conclusion of the fourth round.

Van Gerwen and Kevin Doets square off against two former champions, while Van Gerwen and Luke Humphries, both of whom won in 2010, square off against Kevin Doets, who is unseeded in the Netherlands.
