Former England captain Michael Vaughan claims that Liam Dawson and veteran spinner Liam Dawson make a better team.

Yashasvi Jaiswal was dismissed with his seventh ball on day one of his fourth Test against India, which was his first in eight years and only his fourth overall.

Although left-armer Dawson consistently was left out by England for a variety of other options in his absence, he has a stellar domestic record with both bat and ball.

He is the kind of cricketer that, as a captain, you would expect to “give me some control, a few runs, and you field nicely,” Vaughan told the Podcast’s Test Match Special.

Shoaib Bashir broke a finger during England’s third Test victory at Lord’s last week, prompting him to seek another opportunity, one that county fans have repeatedly demanded. He was then expelled from the series.

Bashir, 21, has been England’s first-choice spinner since the start of last year, with England banking on his potential, despite being unable to hold onto a spot in his country.

In his first three Test starts, Bashir has taken 10 wickets, but the average scalp count was 54.10. In contrast, Dawson maintained a consistent line throughout his 15 overs at Old Trafford, and the tourists’ 264-4 score allowed England to close with a 45-run lead.

Bashir ranks at number 11 with the bat and has the highest Test result, while Dawson has 18 first-class centuries.

“I want to see a batting line-up that is absolutely packed,” Vaughan said of the pitches we are seeing in the UK and possibly Australia.

“On the pitches they are playing, you need control in this England team,” said Bashir, who has an excellent overspin.

In his first international appearance between December 2016 and July 2017, Dawson took seven wickets in three Tests.

He has risen to prominence in county cricket in his absence, winning the Professional Cricket Association’s men’s player of the year last year, and has become a fixture on the global T20 franchise scene.

England’s managing director Rob Key said Dawson was “probably not someone who wants to go around India as the 15th or 16th man” after leaving him out of the tour to India last year. Bashir made his debut on the tour on which he had only six first-class games to his name.

Dawson claimed on Wednesday that he never rejected a test tour despite agreeing to play for the 2023 Pakistan Super League instead of playing in a white-ball series in Bangladesh.

He said, “I don’t think I’d play again because I don’t think I’d want to,” if I’m honest.

I just made it very clear that I enjoyed my cricket. I’m glad to be back involved; however, I must try to enjoy every day that I’m involved in England.

“It helped that I had a second opinion before I started it,” he said.
