Before she unexpectedly realized one day that she could see Michael Douglas in a romantic light, the pair became close friends for 20 years. The pair are now dating.

Davina McCall has opened up about the surprising moment her decades-long friendship with hairdresser Michael Douglas blossomed into something more.

The TV presenter, 57, and her partner, 51, have known each other for over 20 years. Michael originally styled Davina’s hair during her Big Brother presenting days.

They eventually developed a stronger bond than the average client and hairdresser. When Michael approached Davina’s home to fix her locks, the two became “family friends,” and the pair soon started inviting their children over.

Davina split from her ex-husband Matthew Robertson in 2017, but didn’t begin dating Michael until two years later. When asked how their relationship ended up shifting from something platonic into more romantic, she admitted it wasn’t a gradual process.

She told The Guardian : “It was more of a coup de foudre (a sudden unforeseen event). A lightning bolt. I probably don’t want to talk about this because I have to think about Matthew. Michael and I were really good friends because we were hairdresser and client.

He was a fantastic sounding board when I told him all of my secrets and how I felt. I would share my experiences with him and he would share his.

“We would assist each other in navigating the world.” And because he was in love with his wife and I was in love with my husband, we both made an effort to support one another in our lives. That’s the driving force behind it. then a coup de force. Mad. like trying on a different pair of glasses.

Davina stressed that she was careful not to rush into anything after her marriage ended, despite the sudden change in the nature of her and Michael’s relationship. “I’m with someone if I’m with them.” I avoid staring at other people. She continued, “I enjoy being monogamous.”

Since Davina’s health issue last year, their relationship has overcome significant difficulties. The presenter had a benign colloid cyst removed from her brain in November.

The frightful danger of sudden death if left untreated was revealed during a routine menopause health check, which was performed on a regular basis.

Davina’s relationship was hampered by her short-term memory loss, which she acknowledges put her at risk.

She revealed that she and Michael practice what she calls “radical honesty,” which eventually led to Michael’s admission that he occasionally found her “annoying” while recovering.

Fortunately, after a final MRI scan in April 2025, Davina was told the tumour is not returning. She is now back at work hosting ITV ’s Long Lost Family, and credits Michael with supporting her through the ordeal and encouraging her to return to filming when she was ready.

Although it has only been announced since the operation, the couple’s relationship has only strengthened, despite speculation, they aren’t in a rush to get married. Davina grinned when asked how she felt. “We’re in no rush. We’re delighted to see us.
