David Harbour has ‘stepped back’ from his upcoming film Behemoth! which started production in October is still set to star Pedro Pascal, Olivia Wilde and Matthew Lillard

Stranger Things star David Harbour has quit his next film project months into production. The actor was supposed to appear in upcoming film Behemoth! alongside Pedro Pascal and Olivia Wilde, but has now backed out.

The reason for Harbour’s departure has not been revealed, but production is months underway, having started back in October 2025. The plot of the film has been kept mostly under wraps but is thought to be about a cellist.

Likewise, the part Harbour had in the film was unknown, but the vacant position is now thought to be filled. Harbour is reportedly being replaced by Will Arnett, who joins Pascal, Wilde, Eva Victor and Matthew Lillard in the Searchlight Pictures film.

According to sources who spoke to Deadline, the recast should not require too many scenes to be reshot, as Harbour’s reported to have filmed minimal scenes so far as he was tied up with the Stranger Things series five press tour.

The final episode of Stranger Things was released on 1 January, almost 10 years after the show began. Harbour played police chief Jim Hopper, who got involved in the supernatural goings on in the small town of Hawkins, Indiana after he had to look into the disappearance of Will Byers, played by Noah Schnapp.

Series five, which was the last of the popular series, was aired in three parts, beginning in late 2025 and culminating in January. Harbour spent the months leading up to the release of volume one doing a global press tour, including multiple a huge celebration put on by Netflix for ‘Stranger Things Day’ (6 November) and multiple premieres.

In this time, he was also facing a personal PR crisis following the release of his ex-wife Lily Allen’s bombshell album West End Girl. In it, Allen seemed to reveal that Harbour had pushed for their marriage to become open after she got a starring role in a West End play, despite this not being what she wanted, and proceeded to have a long standing affair with a woman, given the moniker Madeleine.

Allen has said that “some of [the album] is fantasy” but added that “some of it is based on truth”. Harbour has not yet commented on the album or what appears to be accusations of infidelity.

Harbour and Allen were married for four years. In September, prior to the album’s release, the actor told Esquire Spain that he would “change either everything or nothing” about the last 50 years of his life.

“You either accept your path completely and realise that even the pain and the slip-ups and the mistakes are all part of the journey, and that there’s truth and growth, wisdom and deeper empathy and connection in all that.”

He added that life was like “a house of cards” so if you change one thing, you have to change it all. Harbour did not come to London, where his ex-wife is from, for the city’s premiere of Stranger Things on 13 November.

Harbour’s representatives were contacted for comment about Behemoth!.
