
Adeniyi Kayode, the driver of a Lexus SUV involved in the fatal crash of heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua, is facing a second-degree murder charge in the Sagamu Magistrate Court in Ogun State.
The driver, 46, was detained on January 2 and handed over the case to Sagamu magistrate’s court, Olufunilayo Somefun.
He was arraigned on four counts, including dangerous driving that led to death and was in violation of Section 6 (1) of the Federal Highway Act, Cap F: 135, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004 (as applicable in Ogun State), and reckless and careless driving.

Driving without a valid national driver’s license, which is against Section 10 (1) of the Federal Highway Act, and causing bodily harm and property damage, which are the other two charges.
A defendant was given two sureties and bail totaling $5, 000.
Along the busy Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on December 29, 2025, Joshua lost his two friends, Latif Ayodele and Sina Ghami.
Joshua and the truck’s passenger suffered minor injuries when the Lexus SUV collided with a stationary truck.
After being determined clinically fit to continue his recovery at home, Anthony Joshua was later discharged from the hospital.
As their bodies were being prepared for repatriation, the former world heavyweight champion and his mother visited the funeral home in Lagos.
He later visited their funeral in the United Kingdom.
A funeral prayer service was held at the London Central Mosque on January 4, 2026, where the remains of Ghami and Ayodele were transported back to the United Kingdom.
Both Ayodele, Joshua’s personal trainer, and Ghami, Joshua’s strength and conditioning coach, were well-known as key players in the boxer’s camp. The international boxing community has been shocked by their tragic deaths.
