Countryfile star Adam Henson has opened up about his family life at home with wife Charlie, who he shares two grown-up children with
Adam Henson has opened up about an emotional ordeal that saw him welcoming a new edition to his family. The Countryfile star tied the knot with his wife Charlie in 2021 after she was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.
Charlie underwent a life-saving operation shortly after the intimate ceremony. She has previously explained that the diagnosis led her to realise a wedding was “the most important thing in the world”.
Adam and Charlie had however been together for over 30 years before tying the knot, sharing two children – Alfie and Ella – together. The couple also have four dogs, including one who was welcomed into the home after an emotional moment.
Speaking to K9 Magazine, Adam said: “Boo is a six-year-old Hungarian Wirehaired Vizsla and was bought as a puppy as a present for my son, Alfie, so she is very much his dog. Olive is a one-year-old Hungarian Wirehaired Vizsla who we had not really planned to get!”
Adam says the family had a companion for Boo, but they were diagnosed with cancer and died, leaving the pooch feeling lonely. He continued: “Boo found herself on her own and really missed a doggy companion, so we bought Olive as a puppy and as a Christmas present for my partner, Charlie.”
TV presenter Adam juggles his work on Countryfile as well as running his Bemborough Farm, which doubles-up as the Cotswold Farm Park. The tourist attraction welcomes around 70,000 visitors each year.
Adam has previously admitted that he plans to swap the farm for a rural cottage once his tenancy has run its course. That is because neither of his children fancy following in his footsteps and taking on the 650-hectare estate.
Adam himself took over the farm from own father Joe. He said: “My dad was ahead of his time by opening a farm for people to come and visit, bottle-feed a lamb or hold a chick.
“While I was pulling on my wellies and chasing my dad out of the door to join him on the farm, my own children aren’t interested in a career in farming.
“Sure, they can lamb a sheep and drive a tractor, but my daughter lives in Perth as an events organiser and my son is a financial advisor in Leeds.
“So when the tenancy runs out in 12 years’ time, Charlie and I are moving to a bungalow close by in Winchcombe, where we have a few acres and will keep a few sheep and the dogs. It will be the end of an era, but I will still be able to enjoy the lovely countryside.”
Adam will return to screens with Countryfile on BBC One from 5.20pm this evening (November 9). He will be meeting the three finalists competing for the title of Young Countryside Champion at this year’s BBC Food & Farming Awards.
