The bobsleigh and skeleton team of the USA has signed American rapper Flavor Flav as a “hype man.”
The upcoming Winter Olympics, which will take place in Milan and Cortina in February, will be hosted by the founding members of Grammy-nominated hip-hop group Public Enemy on Monday.
The 66-year-old tried skeleton and bobsleigh while competing with the USA Bobsled/Skeleton (USABS) team at the 2002 Olympic track in Utah earlier this week.
Flav has also given his support to an Olympic team before, though this is not the first time.
The US women’s water polo team’s official hypeman at the Paris Olympics in 2024 was the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer.
After Serena Williams’ husband, tennis legend Alexis Ohanian, posted on social media about her issues paying rent, he joined Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian in giving money to discus thrower Veronica Fraley.
According to USABS CEO Aron McGuire, “He clearly has a genuine passion for sports and an authentic love for the USA team.”
We’re excited to have Flav bring that enthusiasm to our team and its supporters across the nation because he embodies the same grit, dedication, and pride that define our athletes.
Flav, who was born William Jonathan Drayton, surprised officials by requesting a test of his speed at the Utah skeleton, a head-first sliding competition where competitors can reach speeds exceeding 80 mph.
For safety reasons, team officials directed Flav to a low spot on the track so that it wouldn’t build up too much speed. This is where the majority of first-timers start for safety reasons.
The 66-year-old was unhappy with that and requested that the difficulty be raised by ascending the track’s height.
He reached a top speed of 67mph on his second outing.
According to US skeleton athlete Dan Barefoot, “Oh my gosh, he’s one of the coolest, most adventurous men I’ve ever met.”
He complained that he couldn’t ascend further on the track.
I was somewhat offended by how talented he was. He made the sport appear simple despite the fact that it requires a lot of skill.
“We’ve all been so hyped up to have him with us,” he said. Despite the fact that Flav is one of the greatest hypnotizers of all time, there were people who were frequently hunched and hugged when they weren’t talking to one another because of how much they had grown up in the room.
