All you need to know about Conan O’Brien

  • Conan O’Brien hosted a Christmas party this week, which allegedly saw the late Rob Reiner and his son Nick become involved in a heated argument. Rob and his wife, Michele, left the party early after the reported clash. But just hours later, they were found dead at their home in Brentwood, California. The couple had their throats slit by a relative, and Nick, 32, has now been booked for murder.
  • But who is Conan O’Brien? The Mirror are here to bring you everything you need to know about the American star whose career in the entertainment industry has spanned almost three decades, having written for countless TV shows which air across the globe.
  • O’Brien started his career writing for Saturday Night Live in 1998 before departing the NBC sketch comedy show in 1991. But he bagged himself an Emmy Award for his SNL sketches. Shortly after his departure from the show, he went on to write for the cartoon classic, The Simpsons, for two years between 1991 and 1993.
  • However, after leaving the cartoon, O’Brien went on to land his own show, Late Night with Conan O’Brien, which also aired on NBC for almost 20 years between 1993 and 2009. It was on this show, he became known for his “self-deprecating humour” as well as gaining more recognition for his comedy work. While fronting the show, O’Brien chatted with guests including William Shatner, Eddie Murphy, Serena Williams and Sarah Paulson, to name a few. He made the decision to walk away from the show after refusing to go along with plans to move the programme to a later time slot to fit Jay Leno into the schedule
  • His late-night career, however, came to an end in 2021 after 11 years of fronting Conan on the cable channel, TBS. He said that he wanted to get away from the gruelling late-night format of shows and look towards a new career venture with WarnerMedia. Announcing the news on air, Conan told viewers: “We are winding down our TBS show. The plan is to reemerge on HBO Max sometime in the near future with I think what will be my fourth iteration of the program. Imagine a cooking show with puppets, and you’ll have the wrong idea.”
  • Nowadays, though, he’s still actively engaged in the showbiz circuit. He fronts his own podcast, Conan O’Brien Needs A Friend, which has seen him chat with huge names such as Adam Sandler, Harrison Ford, Billie Eilish and even the former First Lady, Michelle Obama. Earlier this year, he was the 87th host of the Academy Awards (known as the Oscars).
  • Over the course of his career, he’s taken home four Primetime Emmy Awards and six Writers Guild Awards, a People’s Choice Award, two iHeartRadio Podcast Awards and seven Writers Guild of America Awards.
