Two years after being diagnosed with throat cancer, comedian Mark Steel has lost the ability to speak.

The 64-year-old stand-up is well known for his appearances on panel programs like Have I Got News for You and Mock the Week as well as his Mark Steel’s In Town show on BBC Radio 4. Mark first revealed that he was receiving treatment for throat cancer in October of this year, revealing that he had been confirmed with it in October of that year.

The actor is the father of stand-up comedian Elliot Steel, 28, and Eloise Steel, 28, and he is currently dating fellow comedian Shaparak Khorsandi, who was previously married to Natasha Steel. He thanked fans for supporting him during his health battle on X in October 2023.

He wrote at the time, “Thanks SO much to everyone for so many funny, kind messages. And to my brilliant partner, my amazing children, my amazing friends, and my amazing St. George’s staff, who all must be drunk to celebrate good health by drinking utterly.

As Mark battles the cancer, a new update on his condition has been released, revealing that he is finding it difficult to speak or swallow. This week, he sat down with The Times for an interview while promoting his new memoir, titled The Leopard In My House: One Man’s Adventures in Cancerland.

Speaking to Times journalist Helen Rumbelow, she noted: “His voice is barely audible and he pauses between sentences to tackle the job of swallowing”. She continued, comparing the comic to a late musician and singer, and gave a further description of the vocals.

She wrote, “For me, Steel has a voice as strong and tenacious as his political views, and that is what gives his booming estuary accent. Instead, I’m speaking to someone who sounds like Leonard Cohen whispering on a sex tape. As the conversation progressed, Mark mentioned that he had lost appetite and hadn’t eaten in a while, but Mark was relieved to realize that “the cancer isn’t coming back.”

He had revealed to his fans in May 2024 that, seven months after providing first details about his health battle, doctors had declared him cancer-free. He later stated that a nice UCL hospital employee called this week to inform me that my cancer had completely vanished. The treatment worked, the cancer bottled it and ran off, the wimp.

He continued, “I don’t recommend chemo or radiotherapy as recreational drugs,” one thing I’ve learned from all of this. I can’t see them taking off in the clubs. The University of California is a wonderful place filled with wonderful people. They’ve saved my life, but I’m guessing that they just mentioned it on Twitter. I also learned that my son and daughter are incredible and that I have met many brilliant people who are both charming and obedient.

“And besides, I’ve received many messages that I would like to marry, I’d marry everyone of you.” Now I’ll shut up about it, after the ‘ my cancer journey ‘ book and tour and musical. And I’ll be cautious from the beginning to avoid getting cancer.”
