After Jayson Vayson’s corner stopped the fight in the seventh round, Oscar Collazo retained his flyweight titles in a strange way, much to the surprise of the Filipino fighter.
His assistant trainer jumped on the apron to get the referee to end the contest in Indio, California as Vayson was under pressure but playing skillfully against Collazo from Puerto Rico.
As whistles and boos rang out from equally perplexed members of the crowd, Vayson returned to his corner while wearing a perplexed expression.
The 28-year-old Collazo, who retained both of his WBA and WBO belts, expressed mixed emotions about the stoppage.
I was breaking, my corner thought. I desired combat. Vayson reaffirmed his respect for the corner’s decision regarding the boxer’s safety.
Vayson was knocked out in the first round by Collazo, who did some of his best work in the fourth round, using a number of body shots.
Collazo, who has won his first 13 fights of his career, was ahead on all three judges’ scorecards when the match was over.
American Gabriela Fundora held on to Canada’s Alexas Kubicki’s undisputed flyweight title in the co-main.
