Chris Hoy has revealed his children’s heartbreaking response to his cancer diagnosis.

The Olympian was diagnosed with stage 4 prostate cancer in September 2023 before going public a year later. In a heartbreaking interview, Chris’ wife, who was diagnosed with MS at the same time, told BBC Sport her children asked her if the terminal diagnosis “was it because I was naughty?”

The couple’s two kids, a son named Callum David Robert Hoy, born in 2014, and a daughter named Chloe Rose Carol, born in 2017, also asked if their dad “was going to die” and if they were going to “catch it.”

Sarra said her young kids were very scared when their dad revealed the diagnosis and explained how she and Chris worked to explain the terrible news to the youngsters. She added that a common reaction for children was to ask if the diagnosis was their own fault.

In another heartbreaking admission, Sarra also spoke about the family’s journey as Chris goes went through chemotherapy.

She said the family had a beloved cherry blossom tree in the garden, which would blossom when Chris’ chemo ended.

The family painted a huge tree with no leaves or blossom on it and added bits of pink blossom to the tree as Chris went through his treatment.

Holding back tears, Sarra revealed that “everyday the kids would get up and stick a bit of blossom on the tree.”

The idea behind the painting was that kids were “helping daddy regrow”, the mum-of-two revealed.
