Ed Sheeran made an unscheduled appearance over the weekend at the BBC Radio 1 Big Weekend festival, but a fellow musician had a good reason to be less thrilled.
At BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend in Liverpool on Saturday, Ed Sheeran’s secret set delighted fans. However, one person expressed a little unease over the unanticipated appearance.
Tom Odell’s surprise performance, according to what I understand, didn’t make him feel particularly pleased. Ed’s performance on the New Music stage at 1.15pm won the audience over, and Tom didn’t notice. He started his set at 1.30pm on the Main Stage.
Tom was anticipating a sizable crowd for his performance, but when it was revealed, “everyone flocked to his tent and he wasn’t happy,” according to one source.
Despite the incident, Big Weekend festival has proved popular with music fans as other stars have unanticipatedly performed on stage. When Spice Girls icon Mel C invited Little Bit of Love singer Tom Grennan to play a duet of her song When You’re Gone on stage, the crowd was blown away.
After his set on the Main Stage at Sefton Park, Tom said, “Mel is a good mate of mine, but she’s a Scouse legend too – thankfully she was up for it!”
“The entire event was just a fantastic experience, and getting a few mates out on stage to join me really gave it a little something extra,” said one participant. However, doing something to honor the victims of Hillsborough just felt right.
Mel has always been a part of raising money for the support group and is a huge supporter of that cause. She really understands what it means for local people.
The pair spoke poignantly about “uniting the city,” Tom later adding: “We managed to get the tone just right. It’s a special city with an amazing history, and obviously an incredible sporting rivalry,” while Mel wore a 90s Liverpool shirt.
When Mel came out wearing the retro Liverpool kit, there were a few bantery boos from Everton fans, so I went backstage and changed into an old Everton one to redress the balance. It seemed to go well.
“I hope everyone had a great time, and I’m glad people remembered the 97 people who perished in the Hillsborough disaster.” Local rockers The Zutons, YouTuber KSI, and Ella Henderson’s pal joined Tom at the concert.
On Saturday’s Main Stage, Blossoms, Sugababes, Myles Smith, and Sam Fender all took to the stage. On Sunday, British country band Mumford & Sons, American singing sisters HAIM, and Canadian pop babe Tate McRae, were just a few performers to take to the Main Stage.
The Mirror also caught up with The Saturdays star Mollie King at the music event – with the star appearing days after her triumphant return to the air following her most recent maternity leave. “It’s so good to be back,” she told me – and said she was made up to be reunited with co-host Matt Edmonson.
I’ve forgotten about this person. The first person to meet the child was him. Last December, the cricketer Stuart Broad and the Saturdays star welcomed her second daughter, Lilliana.
