The feud between Charli XCX and Taylor Swift continues as the Brat singer takes a swipe at music documentaries just before one about the Eras Tour is announced

Charli XCX slammed music documentaries and appeared to throw shade at Taylor Swift, just days before the Actually Romantic singer announced a two-documentary deal with Disney Plus.

Taylor announced this week that a six-part docuseries about the Eras Tour, titled The End of an Era, and a film of the final show of the tour, which will both air from 12 December on Disney’s streaming platform.

But in an interview conducted before the announcement, Charli XCX, who is thought to be feuding with Taylor, said she wouldn’t choose to do a documentary about her, as she’s not a fan of the usual format of such series.

“I feel like my problem with a lot of musician documentaries is it often shows the musician as coming up against some kind of opposition and eventually overcoming it to be the hero,” Charli told Vanity Fair. “And that’s just not been my experience, you know?”

Taylor has made no secret of how she views her Eras Tour as a massive success in the wake of opposition. She has spoken about how the worldwide tour was physically and emotionally gruelling for her, but she pushed through it to create something for fans.

In the trailer for the new series, Taylor can be heard saying: “This tour is just when every single one of us who had done so much work, pushing, inch by inch to where we all clicked together.” This comes before a clip of the singer saying she “will not be able to get to sleep” and “can’t calm down”.

Similarly, in her first documentary, Miss Americana, Taylor spoke about how she is only where she is because of a “work ethic” rather than because others wanted her to succeed. “It was all fuelled by not feeling like I belonged there. I’m only here because I work hard and I’m nice to people. That work ethic, like thank God I had that work ethic.”

When Miss Americana came out in 2020, there was no bad blood between Charli and Taylor. But in the five years since, the two appear to have started feuding and both are said to have released diss tracks about each other.

In the Vanity Fair interview, Charli declined to comment on the rumoured feud. However, her song Sympathy is a Knife is thought to be about Taylor.

In the song, Charli sings: “Don’t wanna see her backstage at my boyfriend’s show / Fingers crossed behind my back / I hope they break up quick.” Many have thought she was referring to Taylor, who briefly dated Matty Healy, the lead singer of The 1975 and bandmate of Charli’s husband George Daniel.

But, later, Charli explained that the song was about her insecurities and anxieties in the music industry, particularly how she always compares herself to an unnamed singer. Fans of Charli have said the song’s chorus, where she sings “I couldn’t even be her if I tried”, supports that.

However, fans have noticed similarities between the song and Taylor’s new track Actually Romantic which seem to suggest that Taylor was not happy with Charli.

In the song, she sings: “I heard you call me ‘Boring Barbie’ when the coke’s got you brave / High-fived my ex and then you said you’re glad he ghosted me / Wrote me a song saying it makes you sick to see my face / Some people might be offended…”

Taylor hasn’t said the song is about Charli. Instead, in The Official Release Party of a Showgirl, the film accompanying her latest album, she said: “[It’s] a love letter to someone who hates you …

“There can be this moment where it’s unveiled to you, through things that they do that are very overt. And, as I’ve gotten older, I’ve just started to be like, ‘Oh my God, you did so much with this. It’s flattering.

“That is, wow, that is very, very sweet of you to think about me this much, even if it’s negative. In my industry, attention is affection, and you’ve given me a whole lot of it.”
