Manchester City’s Premier League title for the current campaign would be qualifying for the Champions League, according to Matheus Nunes.

The Portugal international, 26, scored City’s opening league goal on Tuesday with a late winner against Aston Villa.

With a fascinating race on the verge of a top five finish, City’s 2-1 victory placed them third while Villa are still seventh.

However, Pep Guardiola’s side have endured a poor campaign as their four-year dominance of the top flight comes to an end, and they were also eliminated from the Champions League in the play-off round.

To qualify for the Champions League, Nunes said, “This is our Premier League trophy now.” In terms of the club, the players, and the mentality, “I think it’s incredibly important for us.”

The standards in the city are “much higher than this.”

City are currently favored to extend their 15-year winning streak in elite club competition, which will include the following years.

In the final four league games, they face Fulham, Southampton, Bournemouth, and Wolves.

If Nottingham Forest defeats them in the final four of the FA Cup on Sunday, Guardiola’s side can end a difficult season on a high by reaching a third straight final.

Midfielder Nunes has been deployed at right-back for City because they have an extensive injury list, which he claims he is “still adapting” and “hoping of” improving a little bit more.

Nunes responded, “I mean of course not,” when asked whether a top-five finish and a cup final would still be a successful season. The club’s standards are far higher than this, in our opinion.

We are aware that these are not the standards we want this club to adhere to, but we are aware of this reality and must accept it. We simply must strive for excellence.

They are, of course, a rollercoaster, and we now have a different goal than we did at the start of the season.
