Julio Cesar Chavez Jr, the former world champion, was detained in his home country of Mexico following his arrest in the US in July.
Five days after he fought Jake Paul in a nearby Anaheim, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers detained the Mexican boxer in Studio City, Los Angeles.
The 39-year-old is currently being held on charges in a prison in Sonora, according to the state’s national arrest registry on Tuesday.
The boxer was taken into custody on Tuesday morning at a border city checkpoint in Nogales and later transferred to a federal facility in Hermosillo, Sonora’s capital.
He was deported, according to Claudia Sheinbaum, the president of Mexico, in her daily press conference.
She previously claimed that prosecutors were working on the case and that he had been arrested on suspicion of arms trafficking and organized crime.
The attorney general of Mexico’s office made no comment.
Chavez Jr., the son of three-weight world champion Julio Cesar Chavez, won the WBC middleweight title from 2011 to 2012.
According to Mexican authorities, he allegedly worked as a scout for the powerful Sinaloa cartel, which Washington earlier this year designated a foreign terrorist organization.
