Call Me Maybe by Carly Rae Jepson has regained popularity after more than ten years, this time driven by nostalgia.

The popular song’s debut album was released in September 2011, but it didn’t become a well-known hit until a year later, making it the year’s song of the year as well. And 13 years later, the catchy tune’s fans and listeners are still fluent in its lyrics.

The track wasn’t just a hit among us ordinary folk, but also Carly Rae’s fellow celebrities, who at the time took to YouTube to share their lip-syncs of the song. What started as a collection of friends hanging out, singing, and dancing to Carly Rae Jepsen’s music quickly became an internet hit.

The top song of 2012 was called “Call Me Maybe” (Internet grab).

At the time of writing, the video has over 85 million views and features Hollywood favourites like Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez, Carlos Pena, Ashley Tisdale, Moises Arias, and many more. Call Me Maybe even sparked the interest of A-listers like Katy Perry as it became a top-seller.

Fans were even more excited about Selena and Justin’s recently published teenage romance because of it. More than ten years later, many people are still fondly remembering the “golden era” of pop music, which saw close celebrity friendships and minimal online scrutiny.

Many people concur that there hasn’t been another video with the same level of energy since, and that celebrities haven’t gathered together for something so spontaneously and fun. One thing is certain: the Call Me Maybe lip-sync video hasn’t stopped being a household name since the start of the decade, which has seen many changes with the development of new trends.

Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber, who were dating at the time, were featured in the popular Call Me Maybe video (La Vida PenaVega/YouTube).

As they celebrated Call Me Maybe’s 13th anniversary, fans took to X to share their thoughts. One wrote: “Wow, what a throwback! That lip-sync battle is pure nostalgic gold! Let’s just say, the early 2010s really knew how to bring the fun”!

Another said: “Such a throwback! Iconic moment from that era”!, with another following: “Nostalgic reminder of pop’s golden era”.

Reflecting on the past, a fourth user commented: “Truly one of those you had to be there moments”, with another user joking: “Feel old”.

This popular Hollywood meet-up gave Carly Rae Jepsen the boost she needed to rise above the charts and establish herself in the industry, not to mention it became one of the most talked about topics at the time. Since then, she has continued to release music, with her latest album, The Loveliest Time, coming out in 2023. However, no matter how much time passes, Call Me Maybe will always remain an iconic anthem.
