Before the final on Friday night, Danny Beard’s friend Billy Andrew, who they host the Gossip Gays podcast with, spoke to the Mirror about Celebrity Big Brother.
A close friend of Celebrity Big Brother finalist Danny Beard has spoken out following tension between the drag artist and fellow housemate JoJo Siwa on the reality TV show. The co-stars clashed recently after a ‘killer nomination’.
Danny, 32, is among the remaining housemates on the ITV show, which returned for its second series just two weeks ago. The RuPaul’s Drag Race UK champion is up against five other celebrities, including JoJo, 21, for the chance to leave the Big Brother house as the winner in Friday night’s final.
Ahead of being reunited later this week, Danny’s pal Billy Andrew – who hosts the Gossip Gays podcast with them – spoke to the Mirror about their time on the show. Billy said: “Danny’s doing incredible. He’s doing us all proud at home.”
Billy and Danny, who have known each other for more than ten years, said, “Dan is the funniest person I know,” during the interview on Wednesday. He is just so kind and compassionate to everyone he meets and is so lovely. I believe that the housemates are seeing that [and] that [we are also seeing that].”
Billy also addressed Danny – who ended up being saved by the public – having been put up for eviction by JoJo in the final nominations just days ago. She had won the power to make a ‘killer nomination’ after being nominated herself.
JoJo chose Danny and said it was because of their humor when asked to pick someone to replace her. There is a time and place, she said, “I know that’s it’s silly and it’s in good fun, and you’re always just taking the p***.” And while it’s sometimes not the right time or place, I believe the humor still shines and can be challenging.
Prior to Wednesday night’s episode, Billy addressed the issue with JoJo on the show, saying, “Dan knows it’s a game and I think JoJo’s playing that game well. She sees Danny as a rival, in my opinion. I believe JoJo could be in it and trying to throw Danny under the bus because he is a very funny queer person and JoJo is also queer.
Billy added that, “In any circumstance, Danny will try to find the good and funny in everything.” And we are seeing exactly that. Dan is that. So, yes, I’m very pleased that we are able to see that side of him.
Billy also explained to us that their pal is “exactly the same” off screen, rejecting any notion Danny might be acting ridiculously for the camera. In our interview, they stated, “Danny is what you’re seeing on the screen.”
“How he is with the people in the Big Brother house is how he is with the woman on the checkout [at Morrisons]. We ended up doing this acoustic performance with the woman on the checkout [once]. Like Dan just brings the fun and joy in every scenario whether it’s in Big Brother or he’s with the lady scanning his shopping in Morrisons. Like that is just Dan, so I’m so glad everybody’s getting to see it,” Billy explained.
Since its launch in 2019, Billy and Danny have co-hosted the Gossip Gays podcast. The host described the project as “the best job ever” and said it’s “the best job ever” as the pair will discuss a range of topics. “Every single week with Danny, I look forward to recording,” Billy added. We get paid for it by laughing with your best friend for a few hours with them.
When asked if Danny was missing, he responded, “It’s been tough. Before the reality of not being in contact with one another hit last week, Billy teased that they were used to the excitement of seeing a friend in the house during the first week of this year’s Celebrity Big Brother.
They claimed that I had missed it because I would Face-Teach him three, four times per day and we would have dinner a few nights a week. But it’s been a pleasure to sit down at 9 o’clock every night, which serves as my little catch-up with my friend.
“For like Drag Race,” which Danny won back in 2022, it was four weeks without communication. That was even worse because it was all nine months in advance of the start of the filming process. Hell, that. You were unaware of what was happening while he was away for that. At least this… it’s pretty much live or 24 hours in advance, so it’s great to see. There was no indication of how well Dan was doing or anything like that.
Other housemates have suggested that Danny wants to win again, but Billy said, “I think Danny went there just to have the best time possible, and I don’t think he’s given it any thought. Because he was such a fan of the show, I believe he was just so happy to be attending the Big Brother house. I don’t believe he entered there to win, but I do believe that simply entering there is a win for him, Bill added.
Billy called housemate Donna an “absolute legend,” adding that the TV shows featuring her and Danny were “gold.” Donna is coming to our summer barbecue, they teased. I believe Donna would take my place, actually. That’s causing me a little anxiety! They are simply having the best time, according to the two.
Asked what it would mean to Danny if they did win, Billy said: “Oh it would mean the world. It would mean so much. Like to be such a fan of the show and then to go on and win it, like, he would be like … he’d be the happiest person ever. He’d be so beside himself. He would be really grateful for that. I’m rooting for him – he’s my winner.”
Celebrity Big Brother airs tonight at 9 p.m. on ITV, STV, ITVX, and STV Player. On ITV2 and ITVX, Late &, Live will air at 10 p.m.
